This is the second issue of Topics in Integrative Health Care (TIHC), a peer-reviewed, open-access quarterly online journal dedicated to advancing the integration of complementary and mainstream approaches to health into diverse settings. The journal targets health care providers who are open to any effective methods to help patients regain and optimize their health, and lead more fulfilling and productive lives. We believe that those methods may be found in all health professions, and in all sorts of settings. TIHC takes an evidence-informed approach, and we are grounded in its three “legs”: patient values and preferences; clinician experience and expertise; and the best available scientific evidence.

A Danish study identifies the need for better communication with chronic low back pain sufferers. The study found communication limitations were significant with multiple disciplines including medical doctors, doctors of chiropractic and physiotherapists. The need to improve communication was greater if the patient was elderly.

Chinese researchers have published several papers this year that support the reliability of computer aided Cobb angle assessment over traditional methods. The accurate measuring of even small changes in Cobb angle can have significant consequences to clinical decision making. Using computer aided measuring methods, the reliability of assessing changes in the scoliotic curve over time has been significantly improved.

Swiss chiropractors currently have the right to medicate their patients when needed with non-prescription drugs and in a recent survey most (72%) felt these drugs were important to their patient care.

A review this month (June 2010) concludes that there is currently no evidence of any adverse effects associated with chiropractic pediatric care as well as other professions using manual therapy.

During the last six months several scientific articles were published addressing the potential risk of mobile phones contributing to the development of human brain neoplasms. Previous investigations also suggest a risk associated with being in close proximity to mobile phone towers and an increased risk of brain cancer on the side of the brain where the phone is used. There are additional concerns with the growing number of children using mobile phones for prolonged periods of time.

The General Chiropractic Council (GCC), a UK-wide statutory body with regulatory powers, has published a new position related to subluxation and the claims made by Doctors of Chiropractic. The GCC was established by the British Parliament to “regulate and develop the chiropractic profession”.

Building on a recently established multi-year affiliation with Foot Levelers, Inc., NYCC is launching a research initiative headed by Professor Dr. Paul Dougherty involving a randomized controlled trial at the Canandaigua VA medical center to assess the effectiveness of custom foot orthotics in veterans with chronic lower back pain and to evaluate the effect of custom foot orthotics on improvement in pain and disability in this patient population.
