Temporomandibular Joint Disorders: Diagnosis [Clinical Review Discussion]

The diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is based on history, signs and symptoms. Pain can arise from the area of the mandible due to several distinct causes. In order to provide a more accurate diagnosis, the Journal of the American Dental Association has adopted criteria to aid in the diagnosis of TMD (1;2). The following table is a good synopsis of the ADA criteria (3).
