Chinese researchers have published several papers this year that support the reliability of computer aided Cobb angle assessment over traditional methods. The accurate measuring of even small changes in Cobb angle can have significant consequences to clinical decision making. Using computer aided measuring methods, the reliability of assessing changes in the scoliotic curve over time has been significantly improved.

During the last six months several scientific articles were published addressing the potential risk of mobile phones contributing to the development of human brain neoplasms. Previous investigations also suggest a risk associated with being in close proximity to mobile phone towers and an increased risk of brain cancer on the side of the brain where the phone is used. There are additional concerns with the growing number of children using mobile phones for prolonged periods of time.

The General Chiropractic Council (GCC), a UK-wide statutory body with regulatory powers, has published a new position related to subluxation and the claims made by Doctors of Chiropractic. The GCC was established by the British Parliament to “regulate and develop the chiropractic profession”.

President George A. Goodman, D.C., F.I.C.C. has announced that effective today Logan College of Chiropractic/University Programs is instituting a First Responders Chiropractic Care Program that will provide complimentary chiropractic care to first responders who work in the St. Louis area. First responders are police officers, firefighters, emergency medical ambulance technicians and returning military soldiers (since 9/11). These free chiropractic services will be offered at Logan’s five suburban health centers, located in Chesterfield, south St. Louis County, Webster Groves, St. Charles and St. Peters.

The United States is experiencing a shortage of primary care family doctors. That’s why over the last 8-10 years, chiropractic associations in states with severe shortages of primary care physicians have sought to expand the scope of practice for chiropractic physicians. They seek new laws and regulations that would allow chiropractic physicians to prescribe a limited range of medications in order to help their patients in a more comprehensive manner. These include medications that are common to conditions frequently seen by chiropractic physicians, such as anti-inflammatory drugs and drugs that treat ailments such as osteoporosis and arthritis.

The new 5,836 square foot community based center is located at 1190 Parker Square in Flower Mound, Texas. The event attendees included Flower Mound Mayor Melissa Northern, the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce, Parker executives as well as students, staff, and faculty, and members of the community.

Dr. Lewis J. Bazakos (’78) was named New York Chiropractic College’s 2010 Distinguished Alumnus at the College’s recent homecoming celebration. National University of Health Science’s clinic in Aurora, Illinois, offers on-site medical exams and chiropractic primary care at area soup kitchens, as well as providing free or reduced cost health care to homeless clients of community social service agencies. After completing the 40-hour program, participants can become Certified Chiropractic Wellness Specialists through NWI, a well-respected organization both inside and outside of the chiropractic profession. The certification will last five years and will also include a membership to NWI.
